The European Painting and Sculpture Department of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art includes 100 works of Dutch and Flemish painting and sculpture, dating from the late fifteenth to seventeenth centuries. Fourteen exceptional gifts of Dutch and Flemish paintings from The Ahmanson Foundation, given beginning in 1972 with the early Rembrandt The Raising of Lazarus, were foundational to the collection. The gift of the Mr. and Mrs. Edward Carter Collection in 2003 and 2009 significantly expanded the Dutch holdings of the museum. Among LACMA’s collection highlights are Hendrick Goltzius’ The Sleeping Danaë Being Prepared to Receive Jupiter, Hendrick Avercamp’s Winter Scene on a Frozen Canal, and Frans Hals’s Portrait of Pieter Dircksz.Tjarck. The collection covers a variety of genres, with strengths in landscape, seascape, and still life. The paintings and sculptures are also complemented by the museum’s impressive holdings of early modern Dutch and Flemish prints and drawings.
