Online resources: images

The Internet is a vast repository of images, though their quality varies widely. Images can also be found in museum catalogues, more and more of which are being published online (links to these are provided on CODART’s museum pages). Other online sources of high-quality images are listed below.

Europeana

 

  

Europeana enables people to explore the digital resources of Europe's museums, libraries, archives and audio-visual collections.
There are more than 15 million items on Europeana. These objects include images, texts, sounds and videos.

Artcyclopedia

  

Artcyclopedia is a portal to images of artworks on the web. It is searchable by artist.
It contains links to museums and other public collections, auction houses and general image archives. It also offers a direct search on artist in Google images, Flickr and Bing images.

Memory of the Netherlands

  
Memory of the Netherlands (Geheugen van Nederland) is a digital treasury, with information about the Dutch past. Visitors to the Memory website have access to hundreds of thousands of images, recordings, film footage and texts that have been classified under some fifty digital collections.

The website of the French Ministry of Culture allows visitors to search collections of French musea and archives, including holdings of Dutch and Flemish art.
   

 

Bildindex der Kunst und Architektur

  
 The Bildindex database holds more then 2 million images of art and architecture from 13 European countries. It is a project of the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte - Bildarchiv Foto Marburg and contains the Marburger index.

Webgallery of art

  

The Web Gallery of Art is a virtual museum and searchable database of European painting and sculpture of the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicism, Romanticism periods (1000-1850), currently containing over 27.600 reproductions.

 NICE Paintings

 

  
The National Inventory of  Continental European Paintings is an on-line inventory of pre-1900 Continental European oil paintings in the UK's public collections. The database has been created by the National Inventory Research Project (NIRP), based at the University of Glasgow.

The website culturalheritage.cc offers (among other things) a searchable database of Dutch and Flemish paintings in Russia, Estonia, Serbia, Cuba, India
